4 Goal-Setting Tips to Help You Realize Your Dreams

Making and realizing goals are powerful tools to use on the road to success. This process forces you to analyze your priorities, think about your future and consider your potential.

However, goal-setting can be an intimidating task if you are approaching it for the first time. To help make the job a little easier, we have four goal-setting tips that can help you realize your life’s dreams.

Identifying Your Goals

To begin identifying your goals for your life, start thinking about where you would like to be 10 years from now in the following aspects:

This is not an exhaustive list; if you have a goal in mind that doesn’t fit into one of these categories, create a new category just for you! Brainstorm ideas for goals you would like to achieve, and make sure the goals you create fit within your value structure. When you firmly believe in the goals you set, you will be more likely to persevere until your goals are realized.

Write Down Your Goals

Once you have identified a handful of goals you really want to achieve, write them down on your computer or in a personal journal. It is important to record your goals in a way that makes them easy to remember and track. Once your goals are precisely recorded on paper or on your computer screen, it will be much easier to construct goal plans for each of your goals that will make those elusive dreams a concrete reality you can work to achieve.

As you are writing your goals, consider the following criteria:

  • You must believe that you can eventually achieve your goal.

  • Goals should be measurable and specific so you know when you have been successful.

  • Goals can be both easy and challenging (a combination of the two is best).

  • Goals may or may not have a measurable deadline.

  • Limit the number of goals you will currently work toward to a reasonable number.

  • Record both long and short-term goals so you can see results while working toward bigger achievements.

Once your goals are written, feel free to show them to someone you trust. Beware sharing your goals with anyone who might discourage you from trying to meet them! Mates, family members and close friends are usually good choices for discussing your goals.

Make it a Priority to Prioritize

With your handy list of goals, you can begin the process of prioritizing your goals. Keep in mind that prioritizing goals isn’t always the same as prioritizing your daily to-do list. Some of the most important goals on your list won’t be the ones you focus on first. Instead of prioritizing in order of importance, choose the goal that you want to focus on in the present. It might be a short-term, easy goal that allows you to enjoy results quickly. It might be a pressing goal, such as finishing your education, so you can move onto the more important goal of finding a career you love.

Goal priorities may change periodically, even from week to week, depending on your current life circumstances. Don’t be afraid to adjust your goal list as needed to help you stay on task in achieving your goals without sacrificing daily responsibilities to do so.

Make a Plan

Goal plans give you the steps you need to take to make your goal a reality. Begin by breaking your goal down into smaller chunks or tasks with assigned dates to complete each step. Be realistic about the dates you set, and be prepared to adjust them as your life’s circumstances dictate.

Include reminders for each task to keep you focused and on track throughout the process. When you complete a step, reward yourself in some small way, so you stay motivated to tackle the next task.

Some people choose to work on one goal at a time, while others will select three or four goals to strive for simultaneously. Once your plan of action is in place, it will be easier to work on a number of goals at once because the effort you put forth will be focused and organized.

Creating and achieving goals are much easier when you break the process down into a constructive model. By brainstorming and recording goals you would like to realize, prioritizing them and creating an easy-to-follow plan, goal-setting can become a daily part of your life.
