Recently I had the opportunity to go to the Northern Trust Open held at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, CA. Here are five personal development tips that I witnessed at the tournament.
-
Good sportsmanship
Golf is a unique sport in that although you are individually competing against one another, you are also cheering each other on. It is really great to hear players commending other players on their great golf shots. Good sportsmanship can be applied to non-sports activities as well. At work or at home, working together, supporting each other, all are great values and can help you succeed.
-
Helping each other
I saw caddys helping other players’ when their caddy was busy. Helping others can go a long way because in turn they will help you.
-
Endurance
Golf is a true endurance sport. It was pouring rain on one of the tournament days, but players withered through the cold.
-
Respecting the fans
Phil Mickelson is well known for his respect for the fans. Unlike Tiger Woods who often runs from the crowd, Phil will actually respond even during play. He is even known to stand 2 hours signing autographs. In the end the score or your ranking doesn’t matter (Phil is technically number 3 in the world). If you have the charisma to please the crowds, you are number 1.

Setting realistic goals
Ryo Ishikawa, 18 year old phenom from japan missed the cut in last year’s Riviera tournament. This year his goal was to make it to the final weekend. This was a realistic goal, which he was able to achieve.
