Myths and realities of panic attacks

Myth: A panic attack can cause heart failure.

Reality: Although during a panic attack you can have rapid heartbeat, they are not dangerous. However, during a heart attack, the most common symptom is continuous pain and a pressured sensation in the center of your chest.


Myth: A panic attack will cause you to stop breathing or suffocate.

Reality: Under stress neck and chest muscles tighten reducing breathing capacity, but thses sensations will pass.


Myth: A panic attack can cause you to faint.

Reality: Although you may feel light-headedness, it will subside. This can be relieved by breathing sloly and regularly from your abdomen.


Myth: A panic attack can cause you to lose your balance.

Reality: you may feel dizzy when panic comes on. If dizziness is longer than a few seconds, this may be due to another reason such as inner ear or allergies so it is important to consult your doctor.


Myth: You will fall when you feel weakness during a panic attack.

Reality: Weakness is due to dilation of the blood vessels and it will pass.


Myth: You can “go crazy” during a panic attack.

Reality: You may feel disoriented or feelings of unreality, but no one has ever “gone crazy” from a panic attack.


Myth: A panic attack can cause you to “lose control of yourself.”

Reality: Your sense are heighten during a panic attack.
