Find out what are the sources or reasons why the holidays are distressful for you. Sometimes churches and community centers offer special programs for people who are alone ore experiencing difficulty. Talking can open the door to self-understanding, validation, and problem solving.

  2. Renew holiday traditions.

    Having new holiday traditions can help replace those traditions that have a bad association. Although it will take a few times for the new tradition to feel like a “tradition.” This can help you create realistic expectations and a special time, rather than a dreadful time.

  3. Choose to participate.

    You do not want to overwhelm yourself by doing everything during the holidays, but it is also not healthy to completely withdraw. When you are feeling the holiday blues it may be difficult to motivate yourself to participate in social gatherings, but it is important to get some exposure. A little participation may life your spirits.

  4. Take care of yourself.

    It’s easy to get carried away buying gifts and taking care of others during the holidays. This can lead to holiday blues. Self-care is important. Take the time to watch movie you wanted to see, read a good book, or listen to music.

    Sometimes helping others who are in a more difficult place than ourselves can help you identify appreciation for good things in our life.
