This is continued from Tuesday’s blog on tips for students on how to survive first year of college. Here are 8 more tips.

  1. Be safe.

It is important to stay safe on college campus. Find well-lit safe paths, avoid walking alone at night, avoid drinking alcohol heavily.

  2. Eat right.

Eating a healthy well-balanced diet can prevent the dreaded “Freshman 15.” Many campuses offer a variety of food options.

  3. Be proactive.

Unlike high school, college is all about independence. There is no body telling you what to do and making sure you get things done. It is your responsibility as an adult to choose your path to success.

  4. Attend classes.

Attendance may not be taken, but one missing classes can interfere with learning the subject.

  5. Sleep well.

It isn’t about “pulling an all-nighter.” At some point with the “all-nighters”, you will hit a limit and crash. This may result in oversleeping and missing classes. Sleep is essential to keep the brain functioning.

  6. Talk with your professors.

It is easy to get intimidated by them, but they are there to help and share their knowledge of the materials. Visit their office hours and ask for direction and resources.

  7. Consider joining a club or team.

Intramural sports, club, or a fraternity/sorority is a great way to meet people and be socially active. Many first-year students can feel isolated or overwhelmed, so it is a great way to feel connected.

  8. Call home.

Family and friends can help you transition by still giving you the connection to a world that is familiar and comforting.
