This is a beautiful research and education institution in San Marino, California. It consists of three different areas. The library contains rare books and manuscripts like the Gutenberg Bible and Ellesmere Manuscript of Chaucer. The art collection is equally impressive containing such famous works as Thomas Gainsborough’s The Blue Boy. Once you step outside, you are faced with 120 acres of botanical gardens. It is divided into more than a dozen themes, including the Australian Garden, Camellia Collection, Desert Garden, Herb Garden, Japanese Garden, Rose Garden, Chinese Garden, Shakespeare Garden, Subtropical and Jungle Garden.
It features an exhibit hall with space and science related displays as well as a planetarium. It is also a popular film location. Famous films and television shows include: Rebel without a Cause, Terminator, 24, MacGyver, etc.
The architecture is beautiful and unique. This center features a museum, research buildings, and a beautiful central garden.
The Grove has a great variety of popular stores including Banana Republic, Gap, J. Crew, Barnes and Nobles, Apple Store. In addition, it is anchored by department store Nordstrom and the Farmer’s Market on the other end. There are also many restaurants including Magginano’s Little Italy, Wood Ranch BBQ and Grill, and The Cheesecake Factory. Entertainment includes a music fountain show that plays every hour and a 14 screen Pacific movie theater complex.
La Brea Tar Pits and Los Angeles Museum of Art
The La Brea Tar Pits is famous for the tar that has been bubbling in this area for tens of thousands of years. The Page museum is dedicated to researching this area and exhibits specimens that have been found. The LACMA which is within walking distance housing over 100,000 collection pieces spanning over multiple buildings.
Santa Monica 3rd Street Promenade and Pier
This pedestrian street houses blocks of popular shops and restaurants. There are often street performers here that often entertain shoppers. Within walking distance is the pier and beach.
The Beach consists of small shops/ interesting vendors, muscle beach, basketball courts, biking trails, tennis courts, volleyball courts, etc.
It has a 928 foot pier that allows for fishing all year long. At the end of the pier it has a Roundhouse Marine Studies Lab and Aquarium that is free to the public.
Skirball Cultural Center and Museum
The Skirball Center houses various buildings including museums with changing exhibits, theater for comedy and cultural shows as well as film events.
It is a great place for all ages. The exhibits change regularly. Currently exhibits include Creative World (learning about inventions that help with communication, transportation and structures) as well as World of Life (learning about living organisms).
