Spring Forward: 8 Ways to reduce stress and gain energy at work

“In times of stress, be bold and valiant.”- Horace (Ancient Roman Poet)

  1. Talk to someone you can trust.

Sometimes venting your feelings to trusted co-workers can be a good release since they know what you are going through. Other times, this can increase stress due to “office politics/office gossip” so it is best to consult a professional (employee assistance program) or someone outside the profession.

  2. Don’t fight distractions.

“Sometimes the most important thing in a whole day is the rest we take between two deep breaths.”- Etty Hillesum (mystic and writer). Watching a plane fly outside your window isn’t wasting time. It is way for your brain to time out. Slowing down and enjoying the scenery can reduce your stress, increase energy and give you insight.

  3. Keep healthy nourishing snacks.

Avoid junk foods that will make you feel sluggish. You will only gain energy temporarily. Instead have fruits close by for that extra energy boosts. Also avoid excessive caffeine. It can increase your heart and make you more anxious and irritable.

  4. Know that any difficulties at work is solvable.

Work can be difficult, but always know that you have a choice. You can quit, make changes within yourself at work, talk to your boss for options, or be patient for a better opportunity to come. Albert Einstein once said “In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.”

  5. Stay organized.

This can help manage time more effectively (since you are not losing things) and also help you work efficiently. Ways to keep organized include use of filing cabinets and cleaning every day (so paper piles don’t increase). Clutter can also increase anxiety and stress levels.

  6. Plan for the unexpected.

There will always be unplanned meetings or emergencies that may come your way. It can be helpful to create flexibility within your schedules for these circumstances. This can allow for effective management of time and cushion in adjusting your priorities.

  7. Exercise breaks

Move around by doing stretches or exercises. Change your position, especially if you have a desk job. It is recommended that employees should set aside at least 30 to 60 minutes a day, which can increase your energy for the whole day. Incorporate exercise naturally into your day. For example, instead of taking the elevators why not stairs?

  8. Take a vacation

It does not do anyone any good to go on long stretches without a break. Traveling during this time even to a local area can re-energize you!
