Famous People with Anxiety

  • Sigmund Freud (1856-1939)

    Freud developed and taught psychoanalysis, which is a form of psychotherapy. During the time when he wrote his famous papers on anxiety neurosis, Sigmund Freud suffered from Panic Disorder. He had symptoms of an Anxiety Disorder and was concerned about his anxiety spells.

  • Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727)

    He is a renown physicist and mathematician and genius, known for such achievements as discovering the law of physics, law of gravity and co-inventing calculus. He had a nervous breakdown in 1677, and again in 1693. He underwent a period of severe emotional disturbances including loss of appetite, loss of concentration and extreme sensitivity.

  • John Steinbeck (1902-1968)

    He was a famous American writer, who won the Pulitzer Prize and Nobel Prize for Literature. Some of his famous novels include: The Grapes of Wrath, East of Eden, Of Men and Mice, and The Winter of our Discontent. However, throughout his life, he suffered greatly from depression and anxiety. Every book he wrote felt to him like a failure, and he never thought he was going to summon the energy and imagination to complete the project at hand. He reacted badly to criticism, which resulted in dark moods and acute anxiety. Unfavorable childhood memories and multiple failed marriages were also a source of his anxiety. Alcohol was a vent he often used to take his mind off his problems or to alter his anxiety and depression.

  • William Butler Yeats (1865-1939)

    He is a Nobel laureate Irish poet and dramatist of the 20th century. From youth, he felt extremely self-conscious as his inadequacies were constantly criticized. He was called mentally and physically defective. Yeats was in a constant state of terror. Yet, he succeeded in changing his personality and life. His inner and outer suffering encouraged him to nourish his imagination on heroic self-projections until his dreams far exceeded reality.

  • Donny Osmond

    He is an American singer, known for his first major hit Puppy Love in 1972 and starring in the TV show Donny and Marie suffers from anxiety. Donny had stage fright and experienced a panic attack during a performance in 1994. He sought help from a psychologist and engaged in cognitive behavioral therapy. He also wrote a book with Patricia Romanowski called “Life is Just What You Make it.”
