Read installation instructions
There are instructions that accompany both the child safety seat and vehicle. Different styles even within the same manufacturers may have different directions. By correctly installing car seats in the vehicle, safety will be maximized.
-
Find the appropriate child safety seat
Find on that best fits the child’s age and also your vehicle
-
Place children in the back seat
Rear seats are considered the safest
-
Place child in rear-facing safety seat
Until the child reaches the maximum weight and height limits, rear-facing seats provide the best protection for a child’s neck and spinal cord.
-
Make sure that the child safety seat or booster seat is firmly fastened.
The instructions should also outline how to fasten the seat to the car. It should not move more than one inch to either side where the belt attaches through the safety seat.
If you are a member of the Auto Club, you can receive two free brochures about child passenger safety, Birth to Boosters and Booster Seats-the 5 step Test at your local Auto Club Office.
