5 more ways of overcoming fear of flying

Earlier this year, I wrote a blog suggesting 5 ways of overcoming fear of flying

Here are 5 more ways:

  1. Breathing Exercises

    • Find a comfortable position and close your eyes

    • Place your hand on your abdomen

    • Inhale slowly through your nose and feel your lungs fill up (feel abdomen rising, not the chest)

    • Hold that deep breath for three to five seconds

    • Slowly let the breath out

    • Rest for a few seconds

    • Repeat ten times.

  2. Progressive muscle relaxation exercise

    • Start with deep breaths (from breathing exercise)

6 Ways to resolve family conflicts in a family meeting

kitchen table

  1. Gather the group and appoint a moderator

For initial meetings, this may be a parent. Having a central person can allow order and organization.

  2. Explain the ground rules

These include no blaming, no labeling or name calling. In this way, the meeting can be a safe environment for discussion and brainstorming.

  3. Work on one problem

Usually when conflicts arise there are multiple problems that need to be tackled. However, this can not only be overwhelming, but confusing and often lead to more conflicts. Early in the meeting, clearly stating one issue can help bring focus.

5 ways to stay safe on the college campus

LMU

  1. Find the safest paths

Even during the day, it is wise for students to take the most common paths especially if you are alone. At night, take the most open, well-lit paths.

  2. Identify a variety communication methods for emergencies

With the advent of a cell phone it has become easier to program numbers and have easy access for communication. Every college campus has a security or public safety department available. It is good to have their number programmed into your cell phone for emergencies. Also learn the location of any call boxes and panic buttons located throughout campus.

5 important values that my boyfriend taught me

Today is my boyfriend’s birthday, so I wanted to dedicate this blog for him. In the five years that I have known him, he has been a wonderful support, confidant, and best friend. He has taught me so much about life and has been a remarkable role model. These are 5 of many values that he has taught me.

  1. Delayed gratification

Worthwhile things can take a long time. There is more to be gained with delayed gratification. Large feats such as buying a house, creating a business all takes time, but the process is rewarding. It leads to more long-term happiness, rather than immediate gratification, which can be brief.

5 things that I do to create memories on my vacation

tourist

Whenever I travel, I have three parts: a travel checklist of supplies I carry with me, keep in mind ways to reduce travel stress, and lastly things to create memories and add to my scrapbooking.

  1. Take pictures

Photos are a great way to preserve memories. With digital cameras, it has even been easier. I usually download the photos onto Shutterfly and then I can order the ones I like, as well as work on various projects through the site.

  2. Record videos

This takes more work, but is worth it on longer trips. Sometimes I will take out a small video camera to record a video diary on my trips.

5 ways to keep children safe in cars

car seat

  1. Read installation instructions

There are instructions that accompany both the child safety seat and vehicle. Different styles even within the same manufacturers may have different directions. By correctly installing car seats in the vehicle, safety will be maximized.

  2. Find the appropriate child safety seat

Find on that best fits the child’s age and also your vehicle

  3. Place children in the back seat

Rear seats are considered the safest

  4. Place child in rear-facing safety seat

Until the child reaches the maximum weight and height limits, rear-facing seats provide the best protection for a child’s neck and spinal cord.

3 ways to persevere

Newton

Sir Isaac Newton

  • Focus on your goal

The definition of perseverance includes the word persistence. Therefore, one way to persevere is to persistently focus on your goal. Tiger Woods became one of the greatest golfers of all time, by focusing on his goal since youth. Even as a professional, he showed tremendous ability to focus. In this year’s U.S. Open, Tiger Woods never gave up on winning another major tournament despite his knee injury. The strength and resilience displayed by this professional golfer captivated golf fans all over the world. Not only does this idea exist with athletes, but also in academics. Sir Isaac Newton was asked how he discovered the law of gravity and he replied “By thinking about it all the time.”

Remembering September 11th, 7 years later

September 11

In 2008, we are still reminded of the terrible September 11th events, but our nation has moved on towards healing. Last year, I wrote a blog on how each individual can live with the memory of September 11. This year, I will focus on some of the events taking place in New York today and the resources that are available.

Events:

  • World Trade Center Site Memorial Ceremony and Remembrance

The official observance will take place at approximately 8 am through noon.

Reasons why the concept of team is important in life

spider web

“When spider webs unite, they can tie up a lion.” -Ethiopian proverb

No matter how hard an individual works, no one can achieve greatness by themselves. Somewhere along the way, they have gained something from someone. I liked this proverb, because it addressed teamwork and life. Individual spider webs, magnificent and strong on their own are even stronger when combined together.

3 ways to strengthen your team:

  • Identify role models for strength and motivation

These can be great leaders from the past, particular field, fictional characters, or athletes. I often read books, watch documentaries about my role models such as Warren Buffett or Tiger Woods. I find pictures or leave books by my desk to inspire me.
