5 reasons why I am captivated by magic

Love to see unbelievable things
My recent experience at the Magic Castle (Blog I, II, III ) confirmed why I love magic so much. The magicians are so skillful and make things that aren’t supposed to happen appear natural. Cards that aren’t supposed to change sizes do. A $20 bill that was supposed to be burnt becomes sealed in a sugar packet.

The challenge of figuring out how the trick works
I find it so interesting trying to figure out how the tricks works. I read in books about magic that there is often misdirection, but even when I am trying to look at things we are not supposed to, it is hard to figure out.

Good conversation starter and socializing events
Most people are interested in hearing about magic. They love hearing about Lance Burton who made doves appear. Or about Siegfried and Roy who made tigers disappear. It is also a great socializing event to attend magic shows. I have fond memories of going to see magic with my family and friends.

Observing many different styles of performers and their stage presence
I have been fortunate to see many magicians over the years. These include Lance Burton, Siegfried and Roy, local magicians on Disneyland’s Main Street, Magic Castle magicians like Brian Dow and it has been a treat each time. They bring their own flavor and style of magic. One might take a more comedic role, while another mind mesmerize you with mind tricks.

A great dose of fantasy
Sometimes I need that sense of fantasy or finding that inner child in me. Magic does the trick. It is great to be able to escape into the world of fantasy and illusion. Immersing myself in a world full of imagination and creativity helps me not only to reduce stress, but to benefit my work as well.
