Last month, I published this Medicare blog because of the research I have been doing for my parents. Similarly, I started delving into understanding Supplemental Security Income. Here are some general facts that I found:

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

  • Low income AND

  • be 65 or older OR

  • be partially or totally blind OR

  • have a medical condition that keeps you from working and is expected to last at least one year or result in death

The benefit eligibility screening tool takes 10 minutes to complete.

OTHER CRITERIA

  • income (money you earn, benefits, etc.)

  • assets (what you own)

  • must be a U.S. Resident

You can find out more specific eligibility requirements through this Understanding SSI eligibility link

HOW MUCH WILL YOU RECEIVE?

Basic monthly payment for 2008 is:

  • $637 for one person

  • $956 for a couple

However it can very depending on the state you live in, as well as your income.
