Must be the clients fault
No way! Actually it’s the opposite. Everyone has their weaknesses and it is rather admirable for someone to know it and want to enhance their life.
-
You have lots of problems and you can’t handle it on your own
Most people are strong enough to handle their problems. “Then why a counselor?” one might ask. Actually a counselor is there to guide and give hints. In social work, we stress empowerment, strength-based perspective where we give them tools to enable them to realize their true potential and inner strength.

Traumatic event happened in your life
To a certain degree everyone has had some traumas in their lives. However, that does not have to be the sole reason to go to therapy. For example, I know many that have gone to therapy because they were stressed out at work, they weren’t traumatized, they were merely stressed and wanted to learn better ways of coping with stress.

Has had a bad/ difficult childhood
Although Freudian psychology may take this avenue, this is not always true.

Something is wrong with you psychologically- NO!!
Some people merely want tools to better their lives and they do not have a psychological disorder.
This is a list that I came up with from my experience of the stigmas that surround the therapeutic community. It is merely my experience and I believe these aspects exist with clients, but does not describe all clients as therapy may seem to imply.
