This type of remarkable professor is hard to come by. I was so inspired by his lecture that I wanted to write a blog about Professor Randy Pausch. Last week he delivered his last lecture to the students at Carnegie Mellon University. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, with a prognosis of only a few months to live. However, the professor’s spirit is full of life, as he shares stories of his childhood dreams, enabling others to dream, and lessons learned. Below is an excerpt from his lecture.

Full lecture can be found on youtube:http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=randy+pausch&search=Search

I have had friends and acquaintances that I knew in the past who have turned to drugs. I have seen firsthand their life take a dramatic turn for the worst. That is partly why I was fortunate not to go take that road. But once you decide that you are not going to do drugs, what are your options for helping a friend?

  1. Confronting them with support

Being empathetic can open up doors.

Since 2002, the percentage of teens who say they attended high schools with drugs problems increased from 44 percent to 61 percent and the percentage in middle schools has increased from 19 percent to 31 percent (according to survey by Columbia University’s National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse). This is an issue that is continuing to get worse, if not already an epidemic. So what is a parent to do when faced with their teen going to school. Even if their teen is a great, obedient child, they will have to face peer pressures along the way. Here are 5 ways of approaching your teen about drug issues.

With the recent September 11th anniversary and the attempted suicide of Hollywood actor Owen Wilson, once again the issue of suicide has been brought to our attention. Here are some general clues as to why someone may want to take their own life.

Assessing Suicidal Symptoms: (SAD PERSONS scale):

  • Sex

While females are more likely to kill themselves than males, males are three times more likely to succeed in their attempts.

  • Age

The risks are greater for people who are aged 15 to 24 or younger, or men aged 75 or older.

I was sitting and reflecting about my experiences and about how a part-time, low-paying job can teach you valuable lessons. One summer, I worked at Robeks and here’s a list of what I gained from that experience.

  1. Team Work

Making a smoothie definitely requires a number of people working coherently as a team. Each worker is responsible for completing certain tasks whether it be to put the right amount of juice in or getting supplies from the back, etc. If one person is not participating or does not complete their task, the smoothie-making process is slowed down, the quality is low, and team morale diminishes.

I am not a nutritionist therefore cannot give you the 411 on diet, but I thought it would be interesting to take a psychological perspective on it. Obesity is a major problem that exists in our society today. If we can stop it early on, I believe that that we can decrease the problem later on. My boyfriend and I came up with some techniques that we would like to use when we have children.

  1. Don’t fall for children targeted marketing

Although some companies are making an effort to stop using child-targeted marketing such as Disney characters on unhealthy cereal boxes, there are still many unhealthy products out there that use child targeted marketing.

september 11

Whether it be the emergency workers, family of victims, students witnessing the event unfold on television, many remember September 11th. I can still remember where I was exactly when this tragic event occurred. I was in the freshman dorm room getting ready for my biology class when my hall mates rushed into my room and told me to turn on the television. It was surreal and felt like I was watching a terrible movie. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the airplane head straight into the World Trade Center. I didn’t have relatives nor did I know anyone directly affected, but it still felt like it hit home. I felt helpless. At that time, I was not an emergency medical technician, so I didn’t know what I could do. I called my mom who worked near LAX and I called my dad who worked at LAX. They both said that this situation was surreal and everyone was taking safety precautions. My dad said he felt like he was in chaos, with of all the flights making emergency landings at LAX.

With so many celebrities and even people in the neighborhood that I know involved in drunk driving, I felt it a cause and my wish to write. These are strictly my personal thoughts and feelings.

My first thoughts when I hear about drunk driving is what in the world are the drunk drivers thinking? How can anyone despite all of their problems be so selfish as to put others in danger. It is not fair for those minding their our business and driving legally to be potential victims of drunk drivers.
